Why Hojicha?
Hojicha, a roasted green tea from Japan, has a warm, toasty flavor profile that pairs beautifully with cinnamon and apple. Its naturally low caffeine content makes it an ideal choice for afternoon indulgence, while its distinctive smoky notes add depth and sophistication to this delightful drink.
Ingredients:
Apple Syrup (per one apple; multiply for larger batches):
- 1 apple, chopped into small chunks
- ½ cup water
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- A pinch of nutmeg
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp brown sugar (or adjust to your sweetness preference)
- ½ tsp lemon juice or ¼ tsp apple cider vinegar (optional, for balancing sweetness)
For the Hojicha Latte:
- 2 tsp organic Japanese Hojicha powder
- 60 ml (¼ cup) warm filtered water (80°C / 176°F)
- ½ cup milk of choice
- ~2 tbsp apple syrup/puree (to taste)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Apple Syrup
- In a saucepan, combine the apple chunks with water, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, brown sugar, and lemon juice or apple cider vinegar (if using).
- Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce to low and simmer for 20–40 minutes, or until the apples are soft.
- Blend the mixture until smooth using an immersion blender or regular blender. Strain through a sieve for a smoother consistency, or leave as is for a chunkier texture.
- Store the syrup in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to one week.
Tip: To ensure easier blending, prepare at least 2–3 apples’ worth of syrup at a time.
Step 2: Brew the Hojicha
- Heat 60 ml of filtered water to 80°C / 176°F.
- Sift the Hojicha powder into a bowl and whisk it with the warm water until smooth.
Step 3: Assemble the Latte
- Add ~2 tbsp of apple syrup to a mug (adjust based on desired sweetness).
- Pour the whisked Hojicha into the mug and stir to combine.
- Froth your milk of choice using a frother, or heat it on the stove and froth manually.
- Top the Hojicha with the frothed milk.
Step 4: Finishing Touches
Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon on top for a final touch of warmth. Sip and savor!
This recipe is a comforting balance of sweet, spiced, and smoky—perfect for tea lovers seeking something new. Serve alongside a warm pastry or enjoy it solo for a quiet moment of indulgence.
