How We Make Our Perfect Hot Hojicha Latte

Josephine Au

Hojicha, a roasted Japanese green tea, is a warming and aromatic drink with a naturally sweet, nutty flavor. Compared to Matcha, which is vibrant and earthy, Hojicha offers a mellow, toasty taste that’s perfect for a cozy hot latte. Its low caffeine content also makes it ideal for late afternoons or winding down in the evening.

Our organic Hojicha powder, sourced from the finest family-owned tea farms in Japan, brings out the full depth of flavor, ensuring a smooth, earthy drink. Paired with oat milk, the latte gets a creamy finish that complements Hojicha’s roasted notes. Almond, coconut, or soy milk are also excellent options. For this recipe, we recommend using 2 teaspoons of Hojicha powder per cup, but feel free to adjust based on your strength preference.

Whether you're a long-time fan of Japanese teas or trying Hojicha for the first time, this hot latte is the perfect way to enjoy its comforting richness.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tsp organic Japanese Hojicha powder
  • 60ml warm filtered water (80°C / 176°F)
  • 1 cup oat milk (or plant-based milk of choice: almond, coconut, soy, etc.)
  • Optional sweetener: 1/4 tsp maple syrup (this is our go-to Hojicha sweetener), honey, agave, brown sugar syrup

Instructions:

  1. Heat 60ml of filtered water to 80°C / 176°F.
  2. Sift 2 teaspoons of Hojicha powder into a small bowl to prevent clumps.
  3. Add 30ml of warm water to the Hojicha powder and whisk in circular motions until a smooth paste forms.
  4. Pour in the remaining 30ml of warm water and whisk to combine the mixture.
  5. Carefully pour the Hojicha mixture into a separate cup or mug.
  6. If you have an electric milk frother: Froth 1 cup of your preferred milk using the frother at a warm-to-hot setting. If your frother doesn’t heat the milk, warm it separately in a pot before frothing.
  7. If you do not have an electric milk frother: Heat 1 cup of your preferred milk in a pot until warm (but not boiling). Pour it into a bowl and use a hand whisk to froth the milk.
  8. Slowly pour the frothed milk into your cup or mug with the Hojicha mixture.
  9. Optional: Add your preferred sweetener.
  10. Lightly stir, and enjoy!
